Fans clamour for Postecoglou or Moyes as Scotland search for Clarke's successor begins

Steve Clarke and the Scotland squad have not even left their World Cup base yet, and already the attention has turned to what comes next. The head coach’s resignation in the early hours of Sunday, following the team’s group-stage exit – extending the Tartan Army’s wait for a maiden knockout berth – has sparked intense speculation over who will replace him.

Fan forums and social media are alight with suggestions, ranging from a return for a familiar face in David Moyes to an audacious move for Ange Postecoglou. “Postecoglou would be the perfect fit. He would get the players playing with swagger and confidence, and he can be pragmatic when needed,” said Neil. Others agreed: “Ange Postecoglou is a serial winner, who knows the Scottish game, has had great success as the Australian national coach and, most of all, knows how to get his players to score goals,” added Gordon.

Scotland fans debate Ange Postecoglou, David Moyes, and others as candidates after Steve Clarke's resignation.

Not everyone is convinced. “I think Ange Postecoglou is a consideration but his recent record is poor. Whatever happens we have to accept this is no quick fix,” warned Tommy. Meanwhile, there is strong backing for David Moyes. “We need to do everything to ensure David Moyes is the next Scotland manager. Even if that means an interim until he’s available. He has the right experience and passion for Scotland,” said Sophie. Eric echoed that sentiment: “There’s only one outstanding Scottish candidate – David Moyes. Way better tactically and equally as grumpy.”

Other names are circulating too. “Given there are no outstanding Scottish candidates, I’d look at someone like Thomas Frank,” suggested Gavin. “Comes across as knowledgeable and intelligent with a tactical plan that would suit our team.” Mark proposed looking at “Postecoglou, Kasper Hjulmand and Jurgen Klinsmann as an outsider”, while Ewan wondered if Roberto Martinez could be considered if he leaves Portugal.

The job, whoever gets it, is described by one fan as a “monster job”, but Mark struck an optimistic note: “Whoever comes in has a good job as we will be at the next Euros with us being one of the host nations with a really good chance to get through groups for the first time.”

For now, the Tartan Army is left to debate, with the search for Clarke’s successor yet to begin in earnest. The question remains: will it be a big name, a Scot, or a left-field choice?
