Scotland’s World Cup hopes hang by a thread as England’s knockout path becomes clearer

Scotland’s hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage are hanging by a thread after a 3-0 defeat by Brazil left them third in Group C with only a slim chance of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams.

With the final round of group fixtures under way, the path to the final on 19 July is starting to take shape. Sixteen of the record 48 teams will be eliminated at the end of the group stage, leaving 32 nations in the mix for the trophy. The top two from each of the 12 groups advance, and the remaining eight spots are taken by the best third-placed sides.

England sit top of Group L, and if Scotland manage to squeeze through, the two home nations would be on the same path to meet in the last 16 in Mexico City on 6 July at 01:00 BST — but they would first have to win their last-32 ties.

New tie-breaker rules add complexity: if teams are level on points, head-to-head results are used first, then goal difference, goals scored, Fifa’s Team Conduct Score (based on red and yellow cards), and finally the higher Fifa ranking from June’s published update. These criteria apply both in groups and when ranking the 12 third-placed sides.

Co-hosts Mexico became the first nation to qualify for the knockout stage, winning Group A with a 100% record. El Tri will host a third-placed team from Groups C, E, F, H or I in the last 32 on Tuesday.

South Africa beat South Korea 1-0 in their final group game to climb into second place and reach the knockout stage for the first time, earning a last-32 tie against Canada in Los Angeles on Monday. The result left South Korea third with three points, waiting to see if that is enough. Czech Republic finished bottom with one point.

Switzerland won Group C with seven points after a 2-1 victory over Canada, clinching a last-32 tie against a third-placed team in Vancouver.

BBC Sport has developed a projection tool that updates in-game to illustrate the schedule all the way to the final, while the Guardian offers an interactive bracketology tool for fans to predict their own path to victory.

For Scotland, the wait continues. Their defeat to Brazil may have left them clinging on, but the final round of group fixtures will determine whether their thread holds — and whether a potential all-British last-16 clash becomes a reality.
