Scottish man shot dead on Caribbean island as two men held

A 37-year-old Scottish man has been discovered shot dead in a car park on the Caribbean island of Canouan, with police detaining two men for questioning. Danny Vettrino, from Dysart in Fife, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body and was pronounced dead at the scene after police responded to reports of shots fired at around 11:30pm on Wednesday, June 24. The Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force said officers arrived at Gym Hill to find Vettrino – a Technical Services Manager of Colombia/Scotland – dead. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the exact cause of death. Vettrino had relocated from Scotland to Egypt in 2015, where he worked for an international peacekeeping organisation overseeing the Egyptian peace treaty with Israel. He moved to Colombia in 2023 and was considering returning to Scotland early the following year before taking up a role as Technical Service Manager at the Canouan Estate Resort and Villas in August 2024. His brother, Robson Vettrino Kolberg, paid tribute online, writing: 'It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of my brother, Danny Vettrino. Much loved by everyone, a pure soul who only wanted success and happiness for all of those around him. He has touched the lives of so many people, from his hometown in Fife to all corners of this world. A unique individual, made up of so many qualities and quirks, especially his impeccable ability to drink anyone under the table. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, the family are heartbroken by this loss and grateful for the love and support we have already received. I hope you're somewhere up there drinking a pint of Guinness with Elvis. I love you.' The police force appealed for witnesses, saying: 'The RSVGPF extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.' Reports in local media suggest two men have been detained for questioning in connection with the killing.
