A six-year-old girl has died after a collision with a van in Newry, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said. The incident, which occurred on Monday, is under investigation.

Hours earlier, a woman was pulled from the sea at Southbourne Beach in Dorset after suffering a medical emergency while swimming with her son. Members of the public brought her to shore between Fisherman’s Walk and Portman Ravine, where emergency services performed CPR for an extended period. A beach hut owner witnessed the incident, and a local who heard the commotion said: ‘They were doing CPR for ages and ages, for an awfully long time.’

Dorset Police were called at 2.21 pm on Monday 22 June 2026. A spokesperson said: ‘Sadly, a short time later a woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin is aware and the coroner has been notified. The death is not being treated as suspicious.’ A Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance took off from the beach at around 4.30 pm.

The tragedy unfolded as a heatwave gripped the UK, with a ‘heat dome’ expected to bring temperatures up to 40C in parts of England and Wales. The Met Office said the heat could surpass the June record set in Hampshire in 1976 and approach the UK all-time high of 40.3C recorded in July 2022. High humidity and very warm nights will make recovery difficult. A red weather warning for extreme heat covering an area from London to Swansea and Somerset to Birmingham has been issued from 9 am Wednesday to 9 pm Thursday.
