Millions of households on benefits are unknowingly eligible for cheaper water, broadband and phone bills through social tariffs, according to the BBC's cost of living correspondent Kevin Peachey.
Social tariffs – sometimes called essential or basic tariffs – reduce bills for people on various benefits, but unlike promotional offers they provide the same service at a lower cost. The discount is effectively subsidised by higher bills for everyone else.

Getting one simply requires contacting your supplier and providing proof, such as details of benefits like universal credit or pension credit. For broadband and phone contracts, regulator Ofcom maintains a list of participating suppliers; eligible customers can switch free of charge with no exit penalty. For water bills, every supplier in England and Wales offers a social tariff, though eligibility and support levels vary. Scottish Water does not have one, but other options exist; in Northern Ireland help comes through the Community Care Register.
However, social tariffs are not available for household gas and electricity bills – despite pressure from regulators including Ofgem. Instead, energy suppliers offer various support schemes, but only if customers proactively get in touch to say they are struggling to pay.
Despite the availability of these discounts, a major report suggests most people who have fallen behind on bills are unaware of the help. Free debt charities such as Citizens Advice can provide independent advice.
