Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has been charged with three breaches of FA rules for orchestrating the Spygate scandal that saw the club expelled from the Championship play-offs and docked four points for next season.
The Football Association announced on Wednesday that Eckert faces misconduct charges under rule E3.1 for allegedly directing or authorising the observation of training sessions of three rival clubs between December 2025 and May 2026.

According to the FA, Eckert “acted in an improper manner and/or brought the game into disrepute” by spying on Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough ahead of fixtures. An independent disciplinary commission earlier ruled that the espionage was “a contrived and determined plan from the top down” and authorised by Eckert himself.
The charges deepen the turmoil at St Mary’s, where the club already admitted spying on Middlesbrough’s training session days before the play-off semi-final in May, as well as earlier sessions at Ipswich and Oxford. The EFL expelled Southampton from the play-offs and docked them four points for the upcoming season.
Despite the scandal, Southampton’s owner said earlier this month that he would not sack Eckert. But the FA investigation has now resulted in formal charges, and the head coach has until next Tuesday to respond.
A statement from the FA said Eckert “has been charged with three breaches of FA rule E3.1 in relation to misconduct between December 2025 and May 2026”. It added: “It’s alleged that the head coach acted in an improper manner and/or brought the game into disrepute by directing and/or authorising the observation of training sessions of Oxford United FC, Ipswich Town FC and Middlesbrough FC ahead of fixtures between these clubs and Southampton FC in December 2025, April 2026 and May 2026 respectively.”
The club has not commented on the latest charges. With further sanctions possible, Southampton now face a nervous wait to learn whether Eckert will be banned or fined, compounding a season already scarred by scandal.
