Shoppers who bought a mild salsa from Tesco or Sainsbury’s are being told to return it immediately – no receipt needed – after the Food Standards Agency discovered it contains barley and mustard not listed on the label.
The FSA issued an alert on Saturday for Capsicana Easy Going Mild Salsa, a 285g pack with batch code 6091 and a best-before date of May 2027. The product is stocked across various supermarkets, including Tesco and Sainsbury’s.
“Two dinner items recalled over undeclared allergens including gluten and mustard; customers can return for a full refund.”
“This product contains barley (gluten) and mustard, making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to mustard and/or allergy or intolerance to barley or gluten, or with coeliac disease,” the FSA said.
Capsicana is recalling the product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers, explaining why the product is being recalled and what to do if they have bought it.
“If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to mustard and/or an allergy or intolerance to barley or gluten, or with coeliac disease, do not eat it,” the FSA warned. “Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. No receipt required.”
Customers seeking more information can contact the Capsicana consumer care team on 0800 0195 617 or email consumer.services@abworldfoods.com.
A second product is also being recalled: Minton & Donello Organic White Orzo, sold by Dundeis UK Ltd. The 500g pack contains wheat (gluten) that is not mentioned on the label or the ingredients list on the reverse of the pack.
The affected orzo has batch code 78850 78850 78850 and best-before dates of January 31, 2027, May 2, 2027 and May 24, 2027.
“This product contains wheat, making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten or with coeliac disease,” the FSA said.
Dundeis UK Ltd is recalling the product from customers and has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations. The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice. As with the salsa, shoppers are advised not to eat the product and to return it to the store for a full refund.
The FSA explained that sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold. Both companies have taken action to alert customers and remove the affected items from shelves.
