A 16-year-old boy was left with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds after a shooting near a mosque in Birmingham, police said.

West Midlands Police said the teenager was taken to hospital after the attack on Bowyer Road, close to St Saviours Road, shortly before 5.30pm on Wednesday.

Officers said in a statement that although the shooting happened near a mosque, they do not believe at this stage the incident was connected to it.

“Our investigation is at an early stage, and officers remain at the scene carrying out forensic and CCTV enquiries, and speaking to people in the area,” the force said.

“We understand this is extremely worrying for people in the area, and local officers will be remaining there to speak to anyone with concerns.”

The nature of the boy’s injuries has not been specified beyond being potentially life-threatening, and no arrests have been announced as enquiries continue.
