Trump faces backlash over leaked Iran deal as 120 children killed in school strike

Donald Trump has been accused of “complete capitulation” after a leaked copy of his deal with Iran appeared to show the president facilitating a $300 billion fund for the Islamic Republic – while simultaneously defending the deaths of 120 schoolchildren in a US missile strike. At the G7 summit in Evian, Trump was grilled over the bombing of an elementary school in Iran during the opening days of the war, which killed around 120 children. “Nobody did it on purpose,” he told reporters, adding that “all war is nasty” and “bad things happen in war”. He said the Department of Defence is still investigating the strike. The leaked memorandum of understanding, obtained by Channel 4 News, sparked a fierce backlash from hawkish Republicans. Senator Lindsey Graham compared the deal to a Marshall plan for Germany “with the Nazis still in charge”. Trump denied that the US would put even “10 cents” into the fund, but acknowledged that Iranian assets frozen during the war should be returned. “It’s not our money, it’s their money, and we froze it,” he said. “At a certain point in time, I guess we’re going to have to give it back.” The US later released a bullet-point list of agreements with Iran, which it hopes will be signed on Friday, bringing an end to the war. The 14-point deal requires Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz in 30 days, end all military operations including in Lebanon immediately, and destroy its enriched uranium by down blending on site under international supervision. Trump said he might attend the signing but it is more likely to be Vice President JD Vance. Asked whether he would blame Vance if the deal fails, Trump replied: “I like that idea, sure. This way, if it works out, I’m going to take the credit. If it doesn’t work out, I’m blaming JD.” He then struck a playful tone: “You better be careful, JD.”
