Trump signs Iran deal at Versailles but ‘not happy with terms’, says Bolton

President Donald Trump toured the gilded halls of Versailles on Wednesday evening alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, then used the royal palace to sign the Iran deal — a surprise move that the president himself had dismissed as merely an architectural outing hours earlier.

“It’s signed, yeah,” Trump told reporters as he left dinner with Macron. “I signed it in Versailles.”

But the former national security advisor John Bolton, now facing charges of retaining classified documents, told Channel 4 News that Trump is “not happy with terms” of the peace deal. Bolton, a frequent advocate for regime change in Iran, has since fallen out with the president.

Trump, famous for his love of gold — the palace features more than 1,000 kilograms of 22-carat gold — had described the visit as a chance to see “the real deal”. “I’m a fan of beautiful places,” he said on Tuesday. “And Versailles is not a gold leaf. Versailles is the real deal.”

Upon arriving, he thanked Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron. “This is so beautiful, and we thank the president,” he told reporters. “Brigitte is an amazing woman.” As photographers snapped pictures, a reporter shouted a question about Ukraine; Trump smiled wordlessly and kept walking.

Inside, prior to the signing, Trump took in the splendour. Outside, tourists complained that the visit shut down access. “We came out here expecting to go inside,” visitor Ben Olson told The Associated Press. “That is not the case today as we learned upon our arrival, so it’s quite unfortunate.” Olson added: “Personally, I dislike Trump, so it’s ever more disappointing.”

The signing echoed the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I. Meanwhile, Trump has warned his critics that continuing the war with Iran could lead to an “international depression,” according to Politico EU.

Gold is Trump’s aesthetic signature, adorning his company’s logo and the escalator in Trump Tower. Since returning to office, he has decked out the White House in gold-toned trim, and his aides regularly proclaim a new “Golden Age”. But Bolton’s revelation suggests the deal may not satisfy even its own architect.
