A two-year-old boy was seriously injured when a car smashed through a fence and into a nursery playground in Ellesmere Port on Monday morning. Two other children were also hurt in the incident at Partou Sunny Days Nursery and Preschool on Vale Road, Cheshire Police said.

The grey Omoda vehicle ploughed through a painted green fence and into the play area at around 9.54am. A 63-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Witnesses described seeing two ambulances, an air ambulance, a fire engine and four police vehicles, including an armed response vehicle, at the scene. The nursery confirmed it was 'dealing with an incident' and closed for the day.

Police are continuing their investigation. The vehicle involved was being removed from the scene.
