Ecuador stun Germany, Canada make history as World Cup last-32 begins; Rice backs Rashford for Arsenal

Ecuador pulled off the biggest shock of the World Cup group stage, beating Germany – a result only 597 of more than 56,000 BBC Sport users predicted correctly. Chris Sutton and AI both got it wrong, but users outperformed them overall, correctly predicting 17 of 24 matches in that set compared to Sutton's 15 and AI's 15. Sutton has been right 41 times (57%) across the tournament, AI 43 (60%), while users lead with 48 (67%).

Canada also made history, reaching the knockout stage for the first time with a win over South Africa – another nation that had never progressed beyond the group stage. Canada boss Jesse Marsch gets stick for his behaviour but his team have something about them, Sutton noted. South Africa finished second in Group A after South Korea took them too lightly.

Next up: Brazil face Japan in Houston at 6pm BST, with Sutton sensing an upset – his commentating colleague Ali Bruce-Ball has Japan as his dark horses. The match is one of four last-32 ties on Monday, alongside Germany v Paraguay, Netherlands v Morocco and England v DR Congo.

England's dynamic duo of Declan Rice and Marcus Rashford are in focus after Rashford forced his way into the starting lineup. The Manchester United forward scored off the bench against Croatia, injected energy as a substitute against Ghana, then started in Saturday's 2-0 win over Panama. Rice praised Rashford's impact against deep defences: 'It's always difficult when you play against 11 behind the ball, as deep as they were. You've got to find solutions. In the last 10 minutes, we found more than we did all game.'

Rice's comments hint at what Rashford could offer Arsenal, who repeatedly struggled to unlock stubborn defences last season, drawing seven times in their title-winning campaign. United have ruled out selling to only Liverpool and Manchester City, leaving the door open for Arsenal, who have already made Piero Hincapie's switch permanent for £34.5m. Tottenham are also interested, but Rashford is reportedly set on a switch to Barcelona – a move complicated by Anthony Gordon's £80m transfer to the Nou Camp. Rashford's £40m release clause would not be a problem for Arsenal, who are eager to retain their Premier League title.
