Zoe Ball is reportedly set to join Greatest Hits Radio after being overlooked for a presenting role on Strictly Come Dancing.

The 55-year-old broadcaster was among the contenders for a role on the new-look BBC show, but sources told The Sun that as soon as she found out about the Strictly job, she decided to accept an offer from Greatest Hits Radio.

Ball stepped down from her BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show a year ago. The source added that she "absolutely loves being a radio presenter" and took time to think about what she wanted after leaving the BBC.

She is due to join the commercial station this autumn. If she makes the move, she will follow former BBC Radio hosts Simon Mayo and Ken Bruce, who also switched to Greatest Hits Radio.

The BBC recently announced that the new series of Strictly will be hosted by Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe. Ball auditioned for the role but was ultimately overlooked.

Speaking on the Dig It! show, Ball said: "I was so chuffed to even be in the mix. There were some pretty amazing people who didn't even make it into the mix. So I made it in the mix, and I had a really fun time having one last little play at a show that I love and adore."

She added: "I'm so thrilled for the gang that has got it. I think there's been so many eyes on this whole process – everyone's quite relieved now that a decision has been made and the right decision has been made."

Ball, who was the first female host of both the Radio 1 and Radio 2 breakfast shows for the BBC, also joked about going through a grieving process after missing out on the Strictly role. She said: "I didn't get it, but it's OK. I have worked through the seven stages of grief and rejection over the last couple of days."
